Book presentation :

MY HANDS REMEMBER THE DARK — SARA BAUN

Raised among the misty fields of a small village in northern Italy, Sara Baun (b. 1993) creates, in black ink, a universe where nature, death, and the intimate seem to belong to the same organism.

My Hands Remember the Dark brings together her work in an artbook entirely devoted to this silent, nocturnal kingdom. Beneath her pen, flesh sometimes gives way to bone and to a pain as beautiful as it is unsettling. A natural, organic, living world devoid of human presence—both magnificent and disturbing—where every image seems to bear the traces of a buried emotion.

Sara Baun works almost exclusively at night, surrounded by plants, books, and bones, consuming an unreasonable number of Bic pens as she patiently builds her images. Her drawings emerge from an obsessive accumulation of lines, textures, and deep blacks. A meticulous technique serving a dark, nostalgic surrealism, nourished as much by the beauty of the living world as by the imagery of psychological and atmospheric horror.

Yet behind the apparent darkness of her work lies something deeply introspective. Sara Baun is drawn to the emotions that leave a mark: the ones that unsettle us, transform us, and sometimes, eventually, make us grow. She dissects them through miles of ink, giving them form and inviting the viewer to linger for a while in that uncomfortable space—until, perhaps, a certain peace can be found within it.

My Hands Remember the Dark is a descent into this singular universe: a world of paper, ink, bones, and vegetation, where the macabre is never gratuitous, but becomes a way of speaking about what remains within us when words are no longer enough.

My Hands Remember the Dark by Sara Baun is a dark surrealist artbook exploring the Italian artist’s haunting black-and-white ink drawings. Filled with intricate illustrations of bones, organic forms, nature, death, and unsettling beauty, this collection offers an extensive journey through Baun’s distinctive world of dark art, macabre imagery, gothic surrealism, and atmospheric horror.
